About
Dr Yongmin Jung is a Principal Research Fellow at the ORC and has over 20 years of experience in the field of specialty optical fibres and optical amplifiers. Currently he leads the ORC research on Multicore (and Multimode) fibre technology, in which he has achieved several world-first results including: i) the world鈥檚 first multimode erbium-doped fibre amplifier, ii) setting the GUINNESS world record on multimode fibre transmission, iii) winning the EU HORIZON PRIZE for breaking the optical transmission barrier and iv) commercialization of multimode/multicore fibre amplifier technology. As a result of the cutting-edge nature of his research, he has published 3 book chapters, 6 patents and more than 370 scientific papers and has a current H-index of 47. He was one of the originators of the hugely successful EU FP7 MODE-GAP project and EU Horizon2020 SAFARI project.

Current research
Optical fibre networks provide the backbone for the internet and optical fibre amplifiers, which are used to boost the signals every 80-100km in long-haul transmission systems, represent a significant source of power consumption in telecommunication networks. Moreover, in subsea systems, power consumption limits the total cable capacity and optimising the energy efficiency of the amplifiers is key. Dr Yongmin Jung is exploring new optical fibre amplifier technology to enable energy efficient optical amplification while reducing the cost per bit and increasing the total capacity. The approach will be based on 鈥淪pace Division Multiplexing鈥 technology and a new array of optical components and fibre amplifiers having multiple spatial channels (either multiple fibre cores or multiple modes within a single fibre core) will be developed to facilitate energy efficient optical amplification.
