Current research
Dr. Spada's research explores the diffusion and impact of governance and social innovations aimed at deepening democracy in Public Administration, Parties and Organizations (Democratic Innovations). Combining large surveys, field experiments, quantitative and qualitative analysis in a comparative perspective, he has examined cases ranging from Brazil, the United States, Cameroon, Iceland, Canada, the UK, Italy, Portugal, Germany and the Czech Republic.
In the next four years, Dr. Spada will be primarily working on a Horizon2020 project called , conducting the evaluation of 11 pilots of Democratic Innovations designed to support the implementation of the European Green Deal. Secondary projects include testing platforms for digital participation, argument mapping, gamification projects and randomized controlled trials applied to study the diffusion of participatory governance innovations.

Teaching
At the moment Dr. Spada is teaching:
1) A first year module that introduces the students to the comparative methods in social science (PAIR1002 - Introduction to Political Systems). The class is based on a pedagogic approach that generate a class level comparative research project that all participants have to contribute to.
2) A joint 2nd/3rd year module that introduces the students to the study of democratic innovations and is integrated with the participedia.net platform
3) A masters level module on Collective Intelligence
4) A first year module that introduces the students to research design
5) A masters level set of lectures that introduces students to Randomized Controlled Trials in social science
Before coming to Southampton he taught classes in Public Policy, Political Economy, Formal Modelling and Statistics.

Biography
Paolo Spada received his Ph.D. in Economics from Bologna University in 2006, and his PhD in Political Science from Yale University in May 2012. Between 2011 and 2013 he was a Fellow at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at the Harvard Kennedy School. Between 2013 and 2015 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for the 黑料社 of Democratic Institutions at the University of British Columbia. In 2015-2016 he worked at the 黑料社 managing and evaluating two parallel . In 2017-2018 he worked on the at at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and on the at at the University of Westminster (UK). In 2018-2019 he worked at teaching Public Policy before joining the Department of Politics and International Relations at the 黑料社. Dr. Spada is currently a Lecturer at Southampton.
