Abstract: Ray traces briefly his history in the Mathematics Department where he served from 1970 to 2016, including his involvement in teaching and the development of new teaching methods, his role in both surveying the student experience in the university and introducing academic staff development, the formation of the “Gravity Group” with James, the development of the fist edition of the undergraduate text “Understanding Einstein’s Relativity” in 1992 and its now graduate sequel with James in 2022. James will talk about the experience of writing the second edition of the book and present some advice on how to deal with publishers, editors and co-authors. He will also present some thoughts on how universities have changed over the last 40 years.
