The talk focused on Tim Berners-Lee proposal of the Web where the “people do the creative work and the machine does the administration”1. Setting out to challenge this, Rowland-Campbell argued that the balance between “man” and “machine” is changing, and the idea of humanity is changing as a result. In her talk she provides a number of suggestions on how this symbiotic relationship between man and machine may play out. /wsi/news/2016/10/wsi-lunch-anni-rowland-campbell.pageFri, 14 Oct 2016 00:00:00 +0100Professor Susan Halford, Director of the Web Science Institute has been made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).https://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/3C89A06872FE4FA2A36224037BE402F2/Halford.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/08/susan-halford-raefellowship.pageProfessor Halford has been honoured by the RSA in recognition of her innovative work as Director of the Web Science Institute, and longstanding contribution to social science research. /wsi/news/2016/08/susan-halford-raefellowship.pageThu, 04 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0100Web Science Student awarded WSI Prizehttps://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/63E8DAC6BA944815B905743FBD48F1FA/WS Student Wins WSI Prize.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/07/student-wins-wsi-prize-2016.page/wsi/news/2016/07/student-wins-wsi-prize-2016.pageThu, 28 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0100Web Science Institute hosts Ethics Symposium at Taylor Wessing, Londonhttps://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/A0940878C5974652A334DFB5A56BB1EA/WSI 2016 Ethics Symposium - PPT Slides colour - V1.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/07/observing-the-web-ethics-workshop.pageThe Web Science Institute hosted an Ethics Symposium at Taylor Wessing, London on Tuesday, 19th July 2016 bringing together experts and practitioners from a wide range of stakeholders who focussed on the specific challenges of data sharing./wsi/news/2016/07/observing-the-web-ethics-workshop.pageFri, 22 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0100WSI Distinguished Lecture with Tom Steinberghttps://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/8BB88D80C25A4A9CB52A05D3EA20CD36/Tom Steinberg v3.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/07/wsi-distinguished-lecture-tom-steinberg.pageThe Web Science Instiute was proud to host a Distinguished Lecture with Tom Steinberg, founder of mySociety at the on Friday 8th July 2016./wsi/news/2016/07/wsi-distinguished-lecture-tom-steinberg.pageThu, 14 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0100Web Science Institute Executive Director named as one of the most influential women in UK Engineeringhttps://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/F28F7F26FA8646C09E734D020949E3B8/Wendy Hall 2014 448x335.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/06/wendy-hall-most-influential-2016.pageProfessor Dame Wendy Hall from the has been named as one of the ‘Top 50 Women in Engineering’. /wsi/news/2016/06/wendy-hall-most-influential-2016.pageThu, 23 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0100The Future of the Internet is at risk say global web expertshttps://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/6250E17219C44B5CB8E22841F1C8C1F7/Dame Wendy Hall Suffrage Award.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE (1).jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/06/future-of-the-internet.pageGlobal web experts, including Professor Dame Wendy Hall, Executive Director of the Web Science Institute, , have warned that the future of the Internet is at a crossroads and we must act quickly to safeguard its future./wsi/news/2016/06/future-of-the-internet.pageThu, 23 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0100World Wide Web Consortium selects Web Science Institute at the to host UK & Ireland Officehttps://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/D3988D8A9B464F4AA341B492B69A74A6/webscience-institute.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/05/w3c-news-release.pageThe World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is pleased to announce that the Web Science Institute (WSI) at the has become the W3C UK & Ireland Office./wsi/news/2016/05/w3c-news-release.pageTue, 31 May 2016 00:00:00 +0100Web Science CDT Student wins Best Paper Award at Web Science 2016 Conferencehttps://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/E63D94CC09564416A2C660AD4C0A54A0/CDT Student Niko Tskalakis - Best Paper Prize 2016.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/05/cdt-student-wins-best-paper-award.pageNiko Tsakalakis, a first year Web Science student at the ’s Centre for Doctoral Training, has won the Best Paper Award at this week’s Web Science Conference in Hannover, Germany. /wsi/news/2016/05/cdt-student-wins-best-paper-award.pageThu, 26 May 2016 00:00:00 +0100Call for Papers, 3rd International Workshop on the Sharing Economy 15-16 September 2016, https://cdn.southampton.ac.uk/assets/imported/transforms/site/news-release/PageThumbnail/33FBE123330B406BAAAE4D1B23CF2A30/Web Image_ECS_Xlarge.jpg_SIA_JPG_fit_to_width_INLINE.jpg/wsi/news/2016/05/call-for-papers.pageThe submission window opens on February 15th;
