I am a sociolinguist specialising in sociolinguistic perception and socio-semantics. I typically use experimental methods to explore how particular linguistic features and broader speech styles come to influence how speakers are socially evaluated. I am particularly interested in the context-sensitivity of emergent social meanings. In this vein, I am currently leading research projects on the social perception of linguistic variation in two very specific contexts: domsetic abuse victim testimony, and professional football commentary.
I am also keenly interested in the emerging subfield of sociosemantics, an area of research aiming to examine the limits of semantic, pragmatic and sociolinguistic frameworks for accounting for 'meaning', broadly construed.
