Critical Infrastructures and Image Politics

About us

Find out more about the Critical Infrastructures and Image Politics research group.

Critical Infrastructures and Image Politics (CIIP) is a research group based in the Department of Art and Media Technology at Winchester School of Art.

Our work combines practice-based artistic research and media theoretical scholarship, to engage critically with the politics and representation of contemporary technologies. We focus on feminist, decolonial and activist-led approaches, to repair algorithmic technocultural biases.

In a convergent media landscape, images have become infrastructural, and representation has become computational. The distinctions between digital and visual cultures, or between technological and ecological questions, are increasingly blurred. Our transdisciplinary and collaborative approach allows us to explore broader critical perspectives.

We were founded in 2023 by co-directors Alexandra Anikina, Stephen Cornford, Kwame Phillips and Megen de Bruin-Molé. Our group builds on the legacy of Archaeologies of Media and Technology.

Our regular activities include a guest lecture series, reading groups, and collaborations with like-minded research groups from other institutions.
